Fat Transfer Recovery: A Day-by-Day Guide

A realistic timeline of swelling, bruising and downtime after facial fat transfer, so you can plan work and social life with confidence.

Recovery after facial fat transfer is generally well tolerated. Most of the visible downtime happens in the first 1 to 2 weeks, while final results settle over several months. Individual experience varies with the areas treated, technique used and personal healing. The timeline below reflects a typical patient journey and is not a promise of outcome.

Day-by-day timeline

  1. Day 0 — day of procedure

You go home the same day after local anaesthetic or sedation. Expect tightness, mild discomfort and initial swelling in the treated areas and the donor site. Rest with your head elevated.

  2. Days 1 to 3

Swelling and bruising peak. The face can feel firm and look fuller than the final result. Most people take these days off work and social plans. Cold compresses and gentle movement help.

  3. Days 4 to 7

Bruising begins to fade and swelling starts to soften. Many patients feel comfortable working from home. Makeup can usually be reintroduced from around day 5, once your surgeon confirms.

  4. Week 2

Most visible bruising has resolved. Residual swelling remains but is easier to disguise. A large number of patients return to office-based work and low-key social events by the end of this week.

  5. Weeks 3 to 4

The face begins to look more like the intended result as swelling continues to settle. Light exercise is usually reintroduced around this time, following individual advice from your surgeon.

  6. Weeks 6 to 8

A portion of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed during the first weeks. What remains is establishing its blood supply. The contour looks more refined and photographs more predictably.

  7. 3 to 6 months

The final result becomes clear. The settled fat is considered long-lasting. A follow-up appointment reviews healing and confirms whether any refinement is appropriate.

When can I return to work?

Patients with office-based or remote work typically return between day 5 and the end of week 2, depending on how visible their swelling and bruising are and how public-facing the role is. Physically demanding work usually needs a longer break; your surgeon will advise based on your procedure.

When can I go to social events?

Small, low-key plans are often comfortable from around week 2. For weddings, photoshoots or important public events, allowing 4 to 6 weeks gives a much better chance that swelling has settled enough for a natural look on the day.

Tips for a smoother recovery

  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first week.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise until your surgeon clears it.
  • Do not smoke, as nicotine reduces fat graft survival.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced, protein-rich diet.
  • Follow all aftercare instructions and attend follow-ups.
